About CoMo Crisis Shelter

CoMo Crisis Shelter came into being when we first had community spread of the Corona Virus in Columbia, MO. Feeling that the most vulnerable among us, the unhoused, had nowhere to shelter in place and could potentially become carriers of Covid-19, a small group of like minded individuals took action. Our first response, initiated on March 21, 2020 was to rent a block of 30 rooms in a local motel. We were overrun with the response and turned away at least 100 people. Our staffing plans fell through when local agencies and other entities went into lock-down due to the virus. We quickly learned that running a shelter for the unhoused from within a social services hotel was untenable. Shifting gears, we closed the shelter on April 3 and immediately replaced it with a tent city (Safe Camp) concept. Even though we had the land owner’s permission, the public backlash was instant, and fierce. Public sentiment and pressure from the city forced us to shutdown the tent city within a matter of days. Since then we have opened The Gail Plemmons Memorial Car Camp and Crisis Triage Center (Car Camp). Car Camp serves multiple purposes: a safe place for those living in their cars to sleep, a drop-off and distribution site for community resources, and a place for those seeking aid and comfort to visit. We continue to search for a new location for Safe Camp and perform health monitoring and supply deliveries to homeless camps across the city. We are a volunteer organization and completely supported by voluntary donations from individuals and groups.
